Bactria Cultural Centre, as a contemporary artistic space, serves as a catalyst by providing opportunities to local artists to express their creativity in an entirely free and experimental way. At present it is the only venue in Dushanbe that encourages artists to apply innovative approaches to manifest their artistic visions.

Bactria Cultural Centre, as the cultural actor of ACTED’s activities, is fully devoted to provide access to information and to vocational training. Educational activities aimed at artists and art professionals are organized with the firm belief that an understanding of national identity as well as social changes and development can originate from active participants of society. The role of an artist is, and always has been, the observer, the analyzer, and the initiator.

One of the main information points in Bactria is its library, which has a collection of books in Tajik, Russian, English, German and French, focusing on mostly culture and history. Art books on the works of Michelangelo, Levitan, Vrubel, Aivazovsky, Theophanes the Greek, movies of Russian and Western avant-garde, and Italian Renaissance are the most valued pieces of the collection.

Bactria Cultural Centre is an educational and cultural center in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. It aims at the development of culture, by offering access to information through seminars and workshops, vocational language and computer training and by organizing artistic events, like exhibitions and concerts. The centre strives to develop contemporary arts as well as to preserve cultural heritage.
Greetings from Georgy Mamedov, Program Director
Dear Friends of Bactria,
Bactria was founded six years ago with the intention of filling a void in Dushanbe’s cultural life by creating a space for artistic and educational activities, which could attract the widest possible audience. The center has fulfilled its goals and has become a focal point for artists to exhibit and for students to participate in the language hours.
But we have to move on…..
The challenges remain constant. To attract large numbers of visitors, Bactria is striving to meet the cultural needs of the general public and to serve as an incubator for alternative artistic creativity, attracting young talents and encouraging collaboration among artists. To deliver its programs in a systematic manner, Bactria has organized its programs under major headlines that can guide visitors to the programs they are most interested in and give them a brief idea of the nature of the programs. The headline, like Bactria_Sound marks all of our musical activities, classical, experimental, and traditional alike, while Bactria_ArtEdu includes workshop, master classes, and discussions on various arts related topics.
Lovers of alternative cinema do not despair! Through our CinemArt project we are presenting a wide selection of independent, foreign and cult-movies followed by discussions among viewers.
Exhibition in a dingy basement? What else can be more bizarre yet adventurous? Our project ArtPodval has certainly all the shocking elements to it. As part of Bactria_Vision, a headline that focuses on hosting exhibitions of different media of visual arts, like painting, graphics, photography, drawing, video art, sculpture and installations, ArtPodval is for the young and hip. If they can take it…
Bactria has a library! It houses a large collection of foreign books and magazines and starting from February we welcome our visitors to enjoy a cup of coffee in our new Reading Room. Public readings, poetry-slams and book clubs will be regular events, conducted in various languages, mostly in Russian and English. Pick a book off our Bactria_Bookshelf and familiarize yourself with the Tajik literary elite!
How many times did you think….”Why did I waste my time learning French in school? I am living in Tajikistan!” Well, don’t think twice, join one of our Language Coffee Hours to make use of your knowledge and have a nice chat with one of our native speaker hosts on a number of subjects, from environment to Dostoyevsky.
Where can you find us? And everything that is going on? Don’t worry; soon you will notice our posters all over in town informing you of the latest activities. If you would like to receive our newsletter all you need to do is send your email address and we’ll make sure that you’ll be fully in the game and get invited to our events.
As for our New Year’s resolutions?... Hopefully everything that was said above and more.
Our doors are open. It’s your turn now.
Enjoy

Bactria Cultural Centre is engaged in projects that further capacity building and development of music industry in Tajikistan. First of all, it offers a venue to musicians through the organization of regular concerts where they can freely practice their creativity. We impose no limitation in the direction of musical genres, but we do promote world music and experiments based on the combination of traditional and contemporary music.

As a result of the continuous degradation of Tajik educational structure, from a unified primary and secondary education under the Soviets, barely 60 percent of Tajikistan’s current school-age population is receiving educational opportunities. Through opportunities for learning and vocational training BACTRIA aims at democratizing access to information and education. |
