The production of pottery was for many centuries the most advanced kind of craft in Central Asia. Ceramics formed by slip casting and other methods in leading centres had a local particularity, this is evident in their original design, ornamental decoration and color. Among the number of remaining traditional centres for ceramics production are Istarvshan, Penjikent, Kanibadam, Samarkand, Shahrisabz, Khorezm and Tashkent.

The variety of pottery also includes dishes in numerous different shapes and sizes, small and large vessels, bowls constructed in a complex manner or with perfect proportions and jugs on stands. Looking at the work of the master potter Sukhrob Saidov one realises the amazing potential of the materials and the skill of the master. In his work, he strives to preserve local characteristics and to revive lost forms and designs. New ornamental and graphic motifs decorate these ceramics. His ceramics received quality mark of UNESCO.

Nowadays, very diverse dishware is made using ancient methods, from large 'khoom' vases for the storage of provisions and 'tanur' ovens for the preparation of traditional bread to modern toy souvenirs. The most famous masters make glazed ceramics in great demand both by the local population and by foreign tourists.
